Spots was lay on the floor sleeping, which isn’t exactly groundbreaking news I know but I liked the ways his little feet were placed on the ground and it just so happened that I had my camera to hand so I snapped.
Converted to monochrome to add a little warmth and sharpened a bit because the field was quite narrow.

Spots was sat on Meg’s window sill. Having a little look-see out. He’s very protective of his territory see.
I was sat on the bed about 4 feet away and was shooting with my Sigma. It’s such an almighty lens, I love it.
Anyway, I got a few shots off and decided this was my favourite.
It was one of the sharpest and I just liked the focus in his eyes.

Spots and Woody sharing a bed.
To be fair, this isn’t Spots bed but he’s still giving Woody a big dirty look as if to say,
“What you doin’ in my bed, fool?”
(Of course I think all animals talk like Mr. T)
This was using my 50mm 1.8D again. It really is a cracking little lens.
Speaking of which, me and a few people (you know who you are so I won’t name names) went out shooting yesterday and Ed (damn okay, I named one) went the entire day using only his 50mm.
Needless to say I was jealous of his autofocus ability but at the same time, I got to play with his 10-20mm again so nothing bothered me!

Being a D40x user I know we have our limitations. One of the big one for most people is our lack of in-built focus motor, so lenses without the (often more expensive) AF-s logo on it, won’t focus automatically.
Fortunately, I’m not a wuss and I don’t mind a little manual baby!!!
At first it was difficult judging the depth of field and what exactly was in focus but all it takes is practice and soon I was spitting out sharp image after sharp image. And when I say sharp….!!
When I took this picture I then knew why people love it and why most photographers have one.
Normally when I take a shot and do all my usual post processing to it to really make it pop, adding an Unsharp Mask is normally on my list of things to do. But with my 50mm, when you get a sharp shot, you don’t need anything else.
Anyway, back to the image. This is the evil cat Spots, just having finished eating his dinner.
I remember watching this animal documentary and it was about lions. The keeper was saying such is the lions confidence in his own strength that he won’t meet you (a human) in the eyes because he doesn’t even consider you a foe so he ignores your presence.
I think somewhere along the line, nobody told this cat he isn’t a lion!
Luckily though it means I can get quite close up and get shots like this with a 50mm without him turning and rubbing his face against me like most cats would. (a double blessing because this cat’s breath stinks!)

Dave the cat!
Dave is our neighbour’s cat. He has a confidence about him that saw him stroll into our house one day through the patio doors. Continue reading »
